Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a audi spare key cost in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of problems in your car. It's a vital component of your audi q5 key's transmission, vehicle since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This is a typical part across the programming audi key 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.jaguar-logo.png
